<\/span>SpaceX Buys 800 MHz Spectrum and Moves Closer to the Mobile Market<\/span><\/h2>\n\n

On 8 October SpaceX signed an agreement<\/a> with the investment firm Grain Management to buy its nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz spectrum licences in the US. The parties did not disclose the price, and The Wall Street Journal<\/a> estimates the deal at about 8 billion USD. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) still has to approve it. Grain bought this spectrum from T-Mobile in August, paying 2.9 billion USD and handing over all of Grain's 600 MHz licences.<\/p>\n\n

Signals<\/a> in the 800 MHz band travel long distances and pass through obstacles better than higher frequencies. SpaceX plans to use the spectrum for Starlink Mobile and combine satellite links with a ground network. That would take the company beyond its current service, which covers places with no cell towers.<\/p>\n

If SpaceX builds a full mobile network, it can compete for the customers of Verizon (NYSE<\/a>: VZ), AT&T (NYSE: T) and T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS).<\/p>\n

For now SpaceX has only agreed to buy the spectrum, and its own full mobile network is not built yet. The new frequencies extend coverage.
