According to the updated Form S-1\/A<\/a>, Anthropic's revenue grew from 11.56 to 16.96 billion USD over the quarter, or 47%. Compute costs rose 77% over the same period, from 5.56 to 9.86 billion USD.<\/p>\n
Anthropic typically books computing capacity 12 to 18 months before it comes online, so it has to forecast demand well in advance. Use of Claude grew faster than that forecast. When the booked capacity ran short, the company rented extra servers at a higher price. About 5 billion USD of Q3 costs came from these short-term agreements, and Anthropic itself says such capacity currently costs significantly more than comparable compute under its multi-year contracts.<\/p>\n
The GAAP result also carries about 1.96 billion USD of non-cash charitable contributions, which the company adds back in its adjusted figure. Customers stayed, and the loss came from one-off and temporary costs. Adjusted operating income even rose in Q3, from 2.24 to 2.46 billion USD.<\/p>\n\n

<\/span>How Demand for Claude Led Anthropic to SpaceXAI<\/span><\/h2>\n
SpaceXAI is the AI unit of SpaceX, formerly known as xAI. The first large deal between the two companies was signed in May 2026. According to the SpaceX prospectus<\/a>, Anthropic gained access to about 325,000 Nvidia<\/a> GPUs in the Colossus and Colossus II data centres. The starting price was 1.25 billion USD a month.<\/p>\n
The partnership then grew fast. Between May and October Anthropic signed and amended several agreements with SpaceXAI. Their combined value reaches up to 120.5 billion USD over terms running into 2029, and once all the capacity is delivered, which Anthropic expects in December 2026, payments could reach about 3.1 billion USD a month.<\/p>\n
Anthropic does not disclose how much of the 5 billion USD of short-term costs in Q3 went to SpaceXAI, so the whole amount cannot be treated as payments to SpaceXAI. The timing and scale of the contracts still suggest that SpaceXAI became one of the main suppliers of the capacity Anthropic needed in a hurry.<\/p>\n
For SpaceX the deals look highly profitable. CFO Bret Johnsen said<\/a> on the company's Q3 earnings call that at current prices new compute deployments pay for themselves in less than a year. That points to high rental prices for customers, Anthropic among them.<\/p>\n
What Anthropic was really buying is time. Turning the deals down could have forced it to limit access to Claude, slow down onboarding of new customers and cede part of the market to OpenAI or Alphabet<\/a>.<\/p>\n
The contracts do not lock Anthropic in for the full term. The initial non-cancellable periods end in January and March 2027. After that either side can end each agreement with 90 days' written notice.<\/p>\n\n

<\/span>Why Anthropic’s Margins Could Recover in 2027<\/span><\/h2>\n
Anthropic is already building a steadier base of capacity. It relies on long-term agreements with Amazon<\/a>, Google and Microsoft<\/a> and is developing Anthropic Direct, a model in which it leases chips directly and hosts them in dedicated data centres run on its behalf.<\/p>\n
Such capacity needs large upfront commitments and should cost less than short-term rental over time. The filing says Anthropic Direct lets the company replace short-term compute bought in periods of high demand with cheaper long-term capacity as its own infrastructure comes online. The near term looks tighter. Anthropic expects its use of short-term compute to keep rising for now and to weigh on both its GAAP and adjusted operating margins. If revenue keeps growing and the temporary capacity is replaced by long-term infrastructure, the cost of each Claude request will start to fall, and the operating margin could recover quickly in 2027.<\/p>\n\n

The Q3 loss looks like the price of very fast growth. Anthropic overpaid for servers for a while to keep serving demand and hold on to its customers. The company kept a positive adjusted operating income and can drop its costliest rented capacity as early as next year.<\/p>\n
For investors ahead of the IPO, the key question is how fast Anthropic Direct and the long-term contracts replace short-term compute. Each quarter's compute share of revenue will show it: 48% in Q2 and 58% in Q3.<\/p>\n\n
