American International Group, Inc. (AIG) is an American insurance corporation that operates through three companies: AIG Property Casualty for insuring trade and individual customers, AIG Life and Retirement for insuring lives and pensions in the US, and United Guaranty Corporation (UGC) for insuring mortgages. During the 2008 crisis, AIG was one of the most active companies in the insurance market – it managed to earn $180 billion, when the Federal Reserve bailed it out, taking the majority of its shares under control.

The company was established in 1919 when an American citizen, Cornelius Vander Starr, opened an insurance agency in Shanghai, China. The business expanded rapidly, and by late 1920, the company had branches throughout China and Southeast Asia. In 1926, Starr established his first office in the US, which boosted the company’s influence on the market. In 1939, Starr moved the headquarters to New York, and later established offices in Europe.
