A year later, AutoNation was ranked 136th on the Fortune 500 list.

The company set out of Republic Industries, which was founded in 1981 and was initially focused on waste recycling. Wayne Huizenga became chairman of the board of directors in 1995, and expanded its business into used auto sales.
